Our photos were taken by: Emily Bockelkamp Photography
We did family photos during the fall last year, so this year our original plan was to do something in the summertime. We planned on shooting our family photos in a sunflower field but with Tyler and I's work schedules and working around a date our photographer was available for just wouldn't line up while a field was still blooming so fall photos it was! I am SO happy the sunflower field did not work out because these pictures are simply magical. Even though we're just a family of three the styling part is still always tricky. So I'm breaking down my tips for styling our little family for photos!
STYLE TIP NO. 1: START WITH YOUR COLOR PALLET
I've learned that starting with one piece you definitely want to wear/be worn in photos makes styling the rest a little easier. I had just received this orange H&M dress in the mail, it was gorgeous and fun, so I knew I wanted to wear it for photos. After determining that, I went searching for Izzy's outfit. I knew I wanted her in something with a pattern so I can pull colors from that for Tyler to wear. It's important to pick colors that work well together because remember, we're complimenting one another not contrasting with them!
STYLE TIP NO. 2: DETERMINE YOUR LOCATION
I always try to make sure we have a location set in place before I finalize our outfits, that way I can make sure our outfits don't wash out into the background. You want the location to compliment your color palette, no contrast with it. Our original plan was to shoot at a park with lots of greenery, once I finalized our outfits and knew Tyler was going to be wearing a dark green shirt and Izzy was being put in a floral dress with darker shades I had a feeling it was all going to clash. The location we went with couldn't have complimented our outfits more.
STYLE TIP NO. 3: ADD TEXTURE
Adding different textures breaks up each look while still making it look put together, make sense? For example; my dress was full of texture and Tyler's button-down was corduroy (he actually wore this same shirt for family photos last year, except in a cream color!) while Izzy's dress had ruffle details that complimented my dress.
STYLE TIP NO. 4: DON'T MIX PATTERNS
Often times mixing patterns makes everything look really busy, I always prefer to stick with one pattern and base the other looks off of complementing colors. While my dress was chosen first, when I was searching for Izzy's outfit my goal was to find a pattern that complimented me but still had something Tyler could pull from.

Styling your family for photos is a struggle! When Tyler and I use to do couple pictures I thought styling us was hard enough then we added a baby to the mix! I hope these tips were helpful and if you have any questions in regards to styling your family for photos I would be more than happy to help!
